Chaitra Pratipada, the first day of a lunar fortnight and start of Hindu New Year, is also celebrated as Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra, Ugadi in Andhra and Karnataka, Navreh in Kashmir, Baisakhi in Punjab, Naba Barsha in Bengal, Goru Bihu in Assam, Puthandu in Tamil Nadu and Vishu in Kerala.

Gudi Padwa is the traditional spring festival celebrated in the Maharashtra and Konkan region of India. This festival is as well the start of the new year as well marking the reaping of new crops. Gudi Padwa is celebrated on the first day of the Chaitra month according to the Hindu lunisolar calendar.

The ‘Gudi’, which means ‘doll’ is created by Maharashtrians, with six ingredients that symbolize new beginnings. The copper urn (Kalash) denotes success, bitter Neem leaves for good health, sugar for sweetness, a saree for lasting prosperity, stick for skillfulness, Turmeric and Vermillion for good luck. This ‘Gudi’ is then hung outside every Maharashtrian house.
