Kala namak, literally meaning Black Salt is a an unrefined salt with its unique flavour and taste used regularly in Indian kitchens. Kala namak contains traces of Sulphur and natural minerals which gives it characteristic dark brown, purple colour. Kala namak is also referred as Himalayan black salt", Sulemani namak, bit lobon, kala noon, or pada loon and is regarded as an important ingredient in Ayurveda as a digestive aid . Kala Namak - black salt is used regularly in Chaats, Chutneys, Salads, raita, several other Indian snacks, and as well as in Chaat Masala.

Unlike, Himalayan pink crystal salt, black salt is not a full-spectrum salt. In fact, it is a condiment rather than real salt and should be used as taste enhancer in combination of regualar salt. 

Kalam Namak is also known as Rati Uppu' in Telugu, 'Intuppu' in Tamil, 'Kallu Uppu' in Malayalam
